Mobile carts for cabinet shops are almost becoming a necessity. Shops are finding it practical and sometimes economical to move a tool from one workstation to another. In addition, many cabinet shops are popping up in garages and small work bays where space is limited. In those circumstances the ability to move shop tools from one place to another and out of the way becomes a necessity.
In my garage I have found that having tools on carts makes my life easier. Here are some examples of tools on carts in my shop. My heavy-duty table saw, the dust extractor, the band saw, the drill press, a small compressor, a large tool cabinet, the compound miter saw, and three garbage cans are all on mobile carts. I also have my snow blower, rototiller and lawnmower on rolling carts so I can move them in and out of my shop when I am working. Even though they have their own wheels they are not easy to jockey back and forth so they are on carts with 4 swivel casters. It has been very useful to me.
I made carts from pieces of plywood and 2X4’s that I had lying around and made them the correct size for each tool. The platforms are easy to make, and the casters are easy to attach. While I have used a variety of casters my favorite is the Regal Ride Caster with Gyro-Glide ball bearing wheels. They are very quiet and easy rolling. The casters have ball bearing wheels and a rating of 250lbs per caster. All my tools except for the table saw are on the 3” wheels and they work great. The table saw is on 5” wheels.
Most often I use two rigid casters on a cart and two swivels with brakes. I use two swivels with brake casters and two basic swivels when I may need to jockey the cart around to get in where I want it. I think you will find 4 swivels very practical for some things. Now if it is important to you these casters carry the NSF (National Sanitation Foundation Rating). You can bake cookies in your shop.
