Normally I would not think of writing a blog about cabinet and furniture levelers (leg levelers). It wasn’t until I once considered using them and didn’t that the value of levelers became apparent to me. We used to be able to say that the house we live in has never had water in the basement. We can’t say that today. Due to the unpredictable weather and unforeseen circumstances it is increasingly common to hear reports of water damage. Nobody is safe. When my son bought this house and asked us to move in we decided to put cabinets in the basement. We anguished over using levelers on the new cabinets and chose not to use them. We set the cabinets directly on the floor. Then, as the saying goes,” the dogs came howling off their chains”. The winds and rain came mixed with snow in historic amounts. Snow was everywhere plugging natural drain fields and storm sewers. Then in the next few days came the blistering sun and sweltering heat. We were lucky with only an inch of water in the basement but the cabinets were sitting directly on the floor in the water. No levelers. Let me tell you about levelers and how practical they are. In your home, unless you get a really massive amount of water, levelers can protect your cabinets. Commercial businesses use them to keep cabinets and furniture off the floor to make cleanings and sanitizing easier. They are used in office furniture, showroom displays, and in convenience stores to protect furniture and cabinets. Look around you will see them used in many places. There are a lot of varieties available. I will cover a few of them in this article. Some levelers come in two pieces, a leg and a mounting block. Manufactures love the mounting blocks because they can use them as skid blocks for sliding assembled cabinets on the floor and for protection when shipping. Then the leg is added at the jobsite. First let’s talk about levelers in the commercial application. Many types of levelers will work in commercial applications so let’s talk about them first. Sometimes an architect will specify levelers on the cabinets to be built for commercial applications. On the one hand the architects are only specifying levelers and so the cabinet builder can use whatever leveler they like. On the other hand, an architect might demand levelers that meet certain safety and sanitation criteria. If that is the case, then levelers will need to be NSF certified. This demands that the levelers used meet National Sanitation Foundation guidelines. The following are 5 levelers that meet NSF criteria. Items one and two are among the most popular levelers in the industry. My brother-in-law has used them all. He used 100 of item number 5 in a plumbing showroom on a sales counter. He also used them in a pizza place. He has used all of the legs mentioned in this section. Check out this video on NSF Leg Levelers 1. CHA485048C 6”. In fact, most of the levers sold do not meet NSF sanitation requirements and for most applications the certification is not necessary or required. All of the legs mentioned in this blog are of high quality and very popular in the commercial, store fixture and cabinet industries. Below are some very good, high quality choices that are not NSF listed. 1. PMI345 10 02 Leveler is a metal leveler with a nylon foot rated at 330lb per leg. PMI27014754 a screw on leveler and the PMI27015644 a press in leveler. These are high impact black plastic and adjustable form 3-3/4” to 5-1/2”. I recommend screw on and they are the most popular. Toe kick clips are also available. The mounting blocks can be used as skids. Finally, I would like to say a word on behalf of the SYGHEAVY M10X75 heavy duty leg leveler show in the video. It is great for attaching to cabinets and 2X4 legs. It is inexpensive and easy to install. Any leveler is better than no leveler in these uncertain times. If you are building furniture or cabinets make leg levelers a priority.
